November Pain – Some TSX Companies I’m Watching

I’ve had a few price alerts trigger on companies I’m watching. These include the following:

  • Altius Minerals (ALS.TO): I have a small position but looking to increase it. ALS is somewhat of a mining ETF with royalties covering a broad portfolio of assets (mostly non-precious metals like iron ore, copper) and exposure to potash. I have faith in the company CEO, Brian Dalton.
  • Altius Renewable Royalties (ARR.TO): This stock is trading at all time lows, though it hasn’t been that volatile since the company went public in 2021. Altius is essentially Brian Dalton bringing the royalty model to the renewable space by providing financing to renewable projects. The stock is backed by Andre Gaumond, a well known mining investor and frequent insider buyer.
  • Victoria Gold (VGCX.TO): The company continues to trend a bit lower, despite gold being near all-time highs. Q3 earnings report was promising and AISC was US$1484. Looking to perhaps add more here, or if I’m lucky, get into the high quality Lundin Mining (LUN.TO, which pays a 4% divvy) if it dips further.

Cripes, I could just list my entire portfolio here and every stock on my watchlist. Hah. Here are a few more.

  • Largo Vanadium (LGO.TO): This company has been floundering since I started watching it a year and a half ago. Earnings continue to disappoint, costs increase, and incidents happen (weather issues, accidents at mine site in Brazil) creating delays/excuses. Largo is probably the go-to first look for people looking for exposure to Vanadium. I’ve watched (on the sidelines) as the stock has deservingly fallen from $7 to around $2.75CAD. Low vanadium prices are not helping.

Would Largo be a buy below $2? There’s probably a Buffet quote somewhere about no price being cheap enough for a company that loses money. I will keep watching it but I need to develop better insight into recent developments in the vanadium market to see whether its allure in the long-term battery storage market has changed. Developing a contact in the industry would be key.
